Giuseppe Cammarano (1766–1850), born in Sciacca and deceased in Naples, trained in the latter city with Fedele Fischetti. From a theatrical family, he worked with stage designer Domenico Chelli and subsequently with landscape painter Philipp Hackert, adding figures to his paintings at Carditello. A study stay in Rome completed his training.
Professor at Naples’s Institute of Fine Arts from 1806, Cammarano combined Neoclassical composition with lively colour inherited from the eighteenth century. A fresco painter, portraitist and decorator, he worked in royal residences and at the Teatro San Carlo. At Caserta he contributed mythological decorations and painted the family of Francis I. His Hercules Slaying a Centaur, dated 1835, likewise demonstrates the place of antiquity in his repertoire.
This profile brings together identity references for Giuseppe Cammarano and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
