A Flemish painter specialising in scenes of hunters and cavalry encampments, Carel van Falens combined training in Antwerp with a career in Paris, where he lived until his death. Also known as Carel van Valens, he was baptised in Antwerp on 24 November 1683 and registered as a pupil of Constantijn Francken at the Guild of Saint Luke during the 1696–1697 guild year.
Without joining the Antwerp guild, van Falens settled in Paris in 1703. He initially worked as a restorer, then earned his living by making copies of works by Nicolaes van Berchem and Wouwerman. During the Regency, the Duke of Orléans commissioned him to restore some of his paintings. After the duke’s death, van Falens was appointed ordinary painter to King Louis XV in 1724 and admitted to the Académie royale in 1726. He died in Paris on 26 May 1733.
Some works bear the signature “C.van Falens” or the monogram CVF. According to the source, the stylistic proximity of his painting to Wouwerman’s led to works by van Falens being attributed to the latter. The Art Institute of Chicago lists under his name Hunters Giving Alms to Beggars, an undated work.
