The Prussian painter Adolf Seel, born in Wiesbaden in 1829 and deceased in Dillenburg in 1907, developed a body of work shaped by his travels and his interest in architecture. He continued his studies in Rome in 1865. In 1870 and 1871, he travelled through Spain, Portugal and the coasts of North Africa; in 1873 and 1874, he travelled to the Orient, where he produced numerous architectural paintings.
The destinations mentioned in his career also include Italy, Cairo and Palestine. The gallery presenting his work highlights his attraction to Moorish architecture and notes the recurring presence of Alhambra motifs in his paintings. Among the works attributed to him is a «Studie eines Treppenturms», oil on canvas, 36 × 21 cm.
The gallery reports that in 1876, at the Vienna Exhibition, Seel received the medal of Archduke Karl Ludwig for «Arab Courtyard in Cairo». It states that this painting was also shown at the National Gallery in Berlin and at the 1878 World’s Fair. According to the same source, the artist regularly exhibited at German and Viennese exhibitions.
This profile brings together identity references for Adolf Seel and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
