A French portrait and animal painter, Alfred de Dreux specialized in the representation of the horse. From 1823, encouraged by his uncle, the painter Pierre-Joseph Dedreux-Dorcy, he studied first with Théodore Géricault and then with Léon Cogniet. His first major canvas, in 1825, was a copy of Géricault’s Mazeppa, painted in 1823. Recommended to Eugène Isabey by his uncle, he also worked in the painter’s studio.
He first exhibited at the Salon de Paris in 1831 and returned regularly until 1859. In 1842, he received his first State commission, for the Equestrian Portrait of the Duke of Orléans and His Guard. In 1844, he accompanied Louis-Philippe on an official visit to England, where he subsequently stayed on several occasions. In 1848, he followed the king into exile at Claremont House, in Surrey, and produced numerous equestrian portraits of members of the English aristocracy. On his return to Paris in 1852, he established his studio at 26 rue de Douai. He was appointed Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur on 16 August 1857.
Among the works noted is La Bataille de Baugé, dated 1839 and mentioned at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Narbonne. Most of his numerous lithographic drawings were published by Maison Goupil. His work is the subject of L’univers d’Alfred de Dreux, followed by the catalogue raisonné, published by Marie-Christine Renauld at Actes Sud in 2008.
