Adriaen van Ostade
Tavern scenes and depictions of peasant life recur in the work of Adriaen van Ostade. The view of peasants’ leisure activities evolves: the early scenes emphasise excessive behaviour, while the later works depict them with greater respect. A Dutch painter and printmaker, also known as Adriaen Hendricx, he was born and died in Haarlem, with which he is associated in 1610 and 1685. Arnold Houbraken reports that he is said to have been a pupil of Frans Hals around 1627, in Utrecht, alongside Adriaen Brouwer and Jan Miense Molenaer. Admitted to the Haarlem Guild of Saint Luke in 1634, he became its dean in 1647 and then in 1661.
According to biographical sources, his oeuvre comprises more than eight hundred paintings, numerous drawings and about fifty prints. At his death, his stock included more than two hundred unsold paintings; fifty prints were sold in 1686, most of them dated 1647–1648. Artists mentioned as his pupils include his brother Isaac, Cornelis Bega, Cornelis Dusart and Richard Brakenburg. One documented example, Ein Geiger unter Bauern, is described in a catalogue as an oil on wood, measuring 35 × 46.5 cm, signed and dated 1644. The painting is noted in the exhibition Von Pieter Brueghel bis Gerard Terborch at the Clemens-Sels-Museum in Neuss, from 9 November 1986 to 11 January 1987.
