A painter and draughtsman, Robert Fernier leaves behind an oeuvre estimated at around 4,000 works, produced over half a century. His activities also include writing: in 1930, he publishes biographies of Dr Grenier and Gustave Courtois, as well as his first book, Le patron du 10. At the end of his life, no longer able to paint, he devotes most of his time to completing the catalogue raisonné of Gustave Courbet, published after his death.
In Paris, he joins Fernand Cormon’s studio and also takes classes with Gustave Courtois. Mobilised during the First World War, he is released from service in September 1919, with the Médaille militaire and the Croix de Guerre with three citations. He organises his first exhibition in Paris in 1923, then establishes the Salon des Annonciades in Pontarlier in 1924. La Foire à Pontarlier receives a gold medal at the Salon in 1932; Bénédiction des Campènes also receives a gold medal at the Exposition internationale de Paris in 1937.
In 1949, Fernier travels to Casablanca to visit his friend from Pontarlier, Gabriel Damitio. After winning the Prix de Madagascar, he travels to the country and returns regularly until 1960. During a first stay in Tahiti and the Marquesas in 1962, accompanied by his wife, Bibi, he paints landscapes and flowers. The municipal Museum of Art and History of Pontarlier holds, among other works, Les Conscrits des Fourgs and Vallée du Doubs et Lac Saint-Point.
