Pilipili Mulongoy (1914–2007) belongs to the generation that renewed painting in the Congo during the mid-twentieth century. He developed his practice in Élisabethville, now Lubumbashi, at Le Hangar, the workshop founded by Pierre Romain-Desfossés in 1946. Alongside Bela Sara and Mwenze Kibwanga, he participated in an educational experiment encouraging imagination and individual pictorial languages.
Nature and animals occupy an essential place within this artistic context. Colour and formal invention give the compositions a dimension beyond straightforward documentation. Washington’s National Museum of African Art holds a Mulongoy painting dated to the 1940s–1950s. Recorded conversations published by the University of Amsterdam document his career. The Fondation Cartier’s “Beauté Congo” exhibition situated his work within the history of Congolese modernism.
This profile brings together identity references for Pilipili Mulongoy and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
