The Flemish painter and printmaker Pieter Casteels III was born in Antwerp in 1684 and died in Richmond in 1749. He studied painting with his father, the landscape painter Pieter Casteels II. In 1708, he travelled to England with his brother-in-law Peter Tillemans; the two worked for the picture dealer Turner, producing copies of old master works, among other things. After a brief return to Antwerp in 1712, he settled in England around 1717.
His work is associated in particular with flowers, game and birds, subjects he treated in both painting and printmaking. In England, he painted flowers and exotic birds intended mainly for interior decoration, including fireplace panels and overdoors. Alongside his work as an artist, he was also an art dealer and importer of European paintings.
In 1726, Casteels launched a subscription for twelve engravings of birds made after his own drawings. The success of this project encouraged him, according to the source, to undertake two further publications: “Twelve Months of Flowers” and “Twelve Months of Fruit”. A signed still life with a parrot, oil on canvas, 64 × 50.3 cm, is attributed to him in a sale notice. The published provenance of this work mentions Waterman-Heiniger, in Basel, in 1976, followed by a Dutch private collection and a Swiss private collection.
This profile brings together identity references for Pieter Casteels III and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
