The painting of Pierre-Charles Comte focuses in particular on the history of the Valois: his historical scenes depict episodes and figures from this period, including Henry III and the Duke of Guise. Documentation of his submissions to the Salon notes the precision of the settings, costumes and accessories. A French painter, he was born in Lyon on 23 April 1823 and died in Fontainebleau on 30 November 1895. He studied under Claude Bonnefond at the École des beaux-arts de Lyon, between 1840 and 1842 according to one source, and then continued his training in Paris under Tony Robert-Fleury.
From 1848 to 1887, Comte exhibited at the Salon de Paris, as well as in Lyon. Shown at the Salon in 1849, Le Couronnement d’Inès de Castro en 1361 is recorded at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon. Jeanne Gray, also titled Le Procès de Jane Grey, appeared at the Salon in 1857; the work is held at the Château de Compiègne. La Rencontre d’Henri III et du duc de Guise (1855), on a subject to which the artist returned, is held at the Musée du château de Blois. Le Serment de Henri de Guise (1864) is also recorded there. At the Salon, he received a third-class medal in 1852, followed by second-class medals in 1853 and 1855, as well as a repeat award in 1857. At the 1848 Salon de Bruxelles, Derniers moments de Cinq-Mars earned him a vermeil medal. He also received a third-class medal at the Exposition universelle of 1867.
History painting, particularly work related to the Valois, formed an important strand of his practice, which also included genre painting. From 1875, he adopted a technique described as more “modern”; his palette, initially restrained and sombre, gradually lightened. Based in Fontainebleau, he also devoted himself to sculpture towards the end of his life.
