Miklos Bokor

Born : 1927Died : 2019Documented citizenships : France

Miklos Bokor (1927–2019), born in Budapest, was deported to Auschwitz and subsequently other camps in 1944. During hospitalisation after the war, he began teaching himself to draw. Following his first exhibitions in Hungary, he settled in Paris in 1960 and formed connections with the poets Yves Bonnefoy and André du Bouchet.

His work explores landscapes, particularly those of the Lot and Switzerland, before reintroducing anonymous, sometimes spectral figures marked by historical violence. At Maraden, near Martel, he discovered a Romanesque chapel in 1996. Between 1998 and 2002 he painted an extensive fresco cycle there, addressing the fate of the Jewish people and the human condition. The Musée d’Art moderne de Paris and Lyon’s Musée des Beaux-Arts hold his works.

This profile brings together identity references for Miklos Bokor and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
