Gustav Bauernfeind (1848–1904), born in Sulz am Neckar and deceased in Jerusalem, was a German painter trained in architecture. He studied at Stuttgart Polytechnic from 1864 to 1869 before working as an architect and illustrator. Travels in Italy and Switzerland preceded his turn towards painting and his journeys to the Near East.
He first explored the region in 1880–1881, travelling from Beirut, where his sister lived. During a later visit he met Elise Bertsch in Jaffa; they married in 1889. He eventually settled in Jerusalem. His views of streets, markets and religious sites combine architectural precision with close observation of their inhabitants. Jewish, Christian and Muslim traditions intersect in his compositions, including his depictions of the Western Wall.
