Born in Manzanillo, Cuba, in 1928, Joaquín Ferrer studied fine arts in Havana and began participating in the national painting salon in 1954. A scholarship enabled him to travel to France in 1960, and Paris became the lasting centre of his activity. His first Paris exhibition at Le Point Cardinal in 1968 included a preface by Max Ernst.
Ferrer developed an abstraction in which geometry interacts with organic forms. His compositions favour relationships between lines, surfaces and spaces over spectacular gestures. Also a draughtsman and printmaker, he illustrated books by poets and writers. In 2017, the Maison de l'Amérique latine brought together 110 paintings and drawings in a retrospective curated by Serge Fauchereau, connecting his Cuban beginnings with his work in his Paris studio.
This profile brings together identity references for Joaquín Ferrer and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
