Eduard Hildebrandt
Born : 1818Died : 1869
Presented as a German landscape painter, Eduard Hildebrandt first apprenticed with his father, a house painter in Danzig, before settling in Berlin, where he trained under Wilhelm Krause, a marine painter. Around 1842, in Paris, he joined Eugène Isabey’s studio and came into contact with Lepoittevin. Works mentioned from his early period include a breakwater dated 1838 and boats off Swinemünde, dated 1840. A catalogue also describes a Rural Scene with Hay Cart, an oil on wood, signed and dated 1843 at lower right, measuring 22 × 33 cm.
After 1843, Hildebrandt extended his travels, which the source links to the influence of Alexander von Humboldt. It dates his round-the-world journey to 1864–1865. Over the course of his career, he gradually moved away from oil painting in favour of watercolour. Many of his sketches in this medium were disseminated through chromolithography.
