Julio González conceives of creation as a construction in space, which he treats as a material in its own right. The son of a Barcelona-based artistic ironworker and goldsmith, he works at a young age in the family foundry with his father and his brother Joan, while also taking painting and drawing classes at the Beaux-Arts in Barcelona. In his early years in Paris, he produces mainly pastels, often portraits of young women.
His first solo exhibition is held at the Povolosky gallery from 1 to 15 March 1922. In 1932, he joins the constructivist group Cercle et Carré. La Montserrat, dated 1937 in the source, is shown in the Spanish pavilion at the International Exhibition that same year. Other works cited include Femme au miroir (1936) and Hommes-Cactus (1939-1940).
Wartime restrictions on oxygen and acetylene interrupt his production, which requires welding. His daughter Roberta donates a collection to the Musée national d’art moderne in Paris, making it possible to follow the different stages of his work.
