Haitian painter Préfète Duffaut, born in 1923 in Cyvadier, near Jacmel, and died in 2012 in Port-au-Prince, is considered one of the pioneers of Haitian naive art. After leaving school at a very young age, he helped his father, a boatbuilder, while also pursuing drawing and later painting.
His name is associated with those of Hector Hyppolite, Philomé Obin, Castera Bazile, Wilson Bigaud, Rigaud Benoit and André Pierre in the history of this art. In 1950, he joined other artists in creating the murals of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Port-au-Prince; they were destroyed in the earthquake of 12 January 2010. Several of his works have been held at the Centre d’art de Port-au-Prince since the institution was founded.
A lot titled « Dorf in den Hügeln » is described as an oil on canvas, signed lower right, measuring 51 × 41 cm; it sold for CHF 220, against an estimate of CHF 500. Publications cited in connection with him include Haïti et ses peintres de 1804 à 1980. Souffrances & Espoirs d'un Peuple by Michel Philippe Lerebours, published in two volumes in Port-au-Prince in 1989, and Voyage au pays des Naïfs by Jean-Marie Drot, published by Hatier in 1986, which devotes several pages to him.
