The French painter and illustrator Charles-Olivier de Penne is best known for his hunting scenes and depictions of animals, while also practising history painting. Associated with the Barbizon School, he was born in Paris in 1831 and died in Marlotte in 1897. Admitted to the École des beaux-arts de Paris in 1849, he studied there under Léon Cogniet and Charles Jacque.
At the 1855 Exposition universelle, he presented Dans deux mille ans, a painting that, according to the source, attracted attention. Two years later, Jésus et la Samaritaine earned him a second Grand Prix de Rome. He made his Salon debut in 1857 and received a bronze medal in 1872. He subsequently exhibited at the Salon des artistes français in 1881 and 1882; the source mentions a silver medal in 1883 as well as his participation in the 1889 Exposition universelle. He settled on an estate in Barbizon until 1879, then moved to Marlotte, according to the gallery source.
The documented public collections include several subjects related to hunting and dogs: Chiens, at the Musée des Beaux-Arts d’Agen; Relais des six chiens, at the Musée international de la Chasse in Gien; and Chiens au repos, in Rennes. The Musée Condé in Chantilly also holds Hallali du cerf dans l’étang de Sylvie and Le Duc d’Orléans, chassant à courre au Bosquet de Sylvie en 1841 (1886). Several drawings dated from 1853 to 1857 are recorded at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris, as is Le berger Phorbas sauve Œdipe enfant, an oil on canvas from 1856.
