Born in Saumur in 1929, André Brasilier studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before staying at the Villa Medici in Rome from 1954 to 1957. His painting combines simplified forms with a lyrical sensibility, giving nature a central place. Horses are a favourite motif, appearing in coastal landscapes, winter woods and sunset scenes. His wife Chantal also recurs in his compositions, notably arranging flowers. In 1980, the Château de Chenonceau hosted a retrospective of one hundred works made between 1950 and 1980. Further retrospectives followed in Antibes in 1988 and at the Hermitage in 2005. Village de Loupeigne sous la neige, dated 1979, and Cavalcade en forêt bleue, from 2023, illustrate the continuity of his themes.
