Olivier Debré

Born : 1920Died : 1999Documented citizenships : France

For Olivier Debré, abstraction linked to landscape takes the form of “fervent abstraction”: painting symbolises the emotion felt in front of the landscape. In 1953, he abandons figure-signs in favour of landscape-signs, a shift that marks an important stage in his work.

The discovery of Guernica, shown in the Spanish Pavilion at the Paris International Exhibition, is a shock for him in June 1937. Between 1940 and 1943, he joins his father and brother in the Maquis resistance. In 1946, in his studio in Cachan, he paints La Vérité et la Justice poursuivant le crime, a canvas eight metres long. His first solo exhibition takes place in 1949 at the Galerie Bing in Paris.

Documented works from the following years include large paintings intended for public spaces: in 1965, two canvases for the Lycée Cordouan in Royan, one measuring 1.8 × 8.8 metres, the other 1.8 × 15 metres. For the French Pavilion at Expo 67 in Montreal, he creates Signe d’homme, a painting measuring 5 × 2.5 metres. From 1980 to 1985, he directs the mural-painting studio at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris.

His work also includes a body of prints, 170 copies of which he donates to the Bibliothèque nationale de France. In 1995, a retrospective of his work is presented at the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume in Paris.
