The French painter Antoine Chintreuil, born in Pont-de-Vaux in 1814 and died in Septeuil in 1873, made landscape a setting for close observation of nature, which he sought to depict without artifice. His compositions, described as delicate and atmospheric, attest to a particular interest in variations in the sky and the effects of light. From 1842, he studied in Paul Delaroche’s studio; Corot encouraged him to paint outdoors. He began by working in the immediate surroundings of Paris.
Around 1850, he stayed in Igny, in the Bièvre valley, returning there during each fine season for seven years. In 1861, his visit to Fécamp, on the Norman coast, resulted in a series of studies of the sea. He exhibited Paysage de la Butte Montmartre at the 1847 Salon. In the same year as his stay in Fécamp, he received a silver medal at the Geneva Exhibition. The three paintings he presented at the 1863 Salon were rejected; in 1867, he received a medal at the Exposition Universelle. L’Ondée, in 1868, and L’Espace, in 1869, are among the works reported to have met with success.
Among the works preserved today, Pluie et soleil. Souvenir des plaines de l’Artois, dated 1873, is held at the Musée d’Orsay; L’Ondée (1868), an oil painting on canvas, is held at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt. The Musée Chintreuil in Pont-de-Vaux also holds a collection of the artist’s works. In 2017, the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire de Meudon devoted the exhibition « Antoine Chintreuil, rêveries d’un paysagiste solitaire » to him, presented from 30 March to 2 July.
