Marlene Dumas

Born : 1953Documented citizenships : Netherlands · South Africa

Marlene Dumas’s formative works combine hybrid investigations, at times abstract and at times post-conceptual, with collage and writing. Painting, less present during this period, would later become her preferred medium. She studied fine art at the Michaelis School of Fine Art from 1972 to 1975, then at the Ateliers ’63 in Haarlem from 1976 to 1978. In 1979–1980, she continued her studies at the Institute of Psychology of the University of Amsterdam.

Among the works from these years are those she made between 1977 and 1981 after Andersen’s The Little Mermaid. Snow White and the Broken Arm dates from 1988.

In 2022, the Palazzo Grassi in Venice devoted the solo exhibition Marlene Dumas: open-end to her. Her work is represented in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, the Fondation Beyeler, the Louvre, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and Tate.
