Willy Moralt
Documented citizenships : Germany
Wilhelm Karl Paul Moralt (1884–1947), known as Willy Moralt, was a German genre and landscape painter. Beginning in 1903, he studied at the Munich Academy under Karl Raupp. An auction listing reports that he also learned from his father, Paul Moralt, a pupil of Spitzweg and Christian Morgenstern, and that he inherited a few of Spitzweg’s sketchbooks and preparatory drawings. According to the same listing, he exhibited at the Glaspalast in Munich shortly after beginning his studies.
Works listed in auction notices attest to a range of subjects and techniques: “Der Kakteenfreund” is described as an oil on wood measuring 30 × 21 cm, while “Der Ausflug ins Grüne”, an oil on panel signed lower right with Munich indicated, measures 27.6 × 38.6 cm. The titles “Die Wallfahrtskirche Maria Gern bei Berchtesgaden”, a gouache, and “Der Vogelfreund auf der Terrasse”, an oil on wood, complete this documented group.
This profile brings together identity references for Willy Moralt and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
