Salomon van Ruysdael

Born : 1602Died : 1670

The Dutch landscape painter Salomon van Ruysdael devoted his work mainly to flatland landscapes, shores, and river or canal scenes. Born around 1602 in Naarden, he died in Haarlem on 3 November 1670. He was the brother of Isaac van Ruisdael, the father of Jacob Salomonsz van Ruysdael and the uncle of Jacob Isaakszoon van Ruisdael. He joined the Haarlem painters’ guild in 1623 under the name Salomon de Gooyer and became its director in 1648.

His travels took him from Haarlem to Leiden, Utrecht, Amersfoort, Alkmaar, Rhenen and Dordrecht, where he painted landscapes and residences. According to the French source, he did not work on commission but produced small paintings for sale. Around 1631–1632, his distinctive style became more established, although his river landscapes remained difficult to distinguish from those of Jan van Goyen. Between 1645 and 1655, he painted a series of views described as peaceful and clear.

The works cited include Still Life with a Turkey (1661), held at the Musée du Louvre; Ferry on a River (1649), at the National Gallery of Art in Washington; and River Landscape (1642), at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Strasbourg.
