Johannes Marius ten Kate (1859–1896), born in Amsterdam and deceased in The Hague, grew up in a family of painters. His father, Johan Mari Henri ten Kate, specialised in Romantic genre scenes. Johannes developed within the same artistic environment and became a member of The Hague’s Pulchri Studio artists’ society. He painted landscapes, genre subjects and particularly episodes of life along the Dutch coast.
His beach paintings combine figures and everyday activities with expansive maritime settings. Women and children awaiting fishing boats, fish sales and family outings provide subjects for a practice situated between Romanticism and Impressionism. Family day on the Scheveningen beach exemplifies this repertoire. It appeared at the Frans Hals Museum in 2012 and the Katwijks Museum in 2023–2024 in exhibitions exploring relationships between art and coastal life.
