Filippo Lauri was born in Rome in 1623 into the family of Flemish painter Balthasar Lawers, whose name was Italianised as Lauri. Trained by his brother Francesco and subsequently Angelo Caroselli, he pursued his career in Rome, where he died in 1694. He joined the Accademia di San Luca in 1654 and participated in decorating Alexander VII's gallery at the Quirinal Palace in 1656–1657.
Lauri painted religious and mythological subjects, often in small formats intended for collectors. He also supplied figures for landscapes by Gaspard Dughet and architectural perspectives by Viviano Codazzi. With Filippo Gagliardi, he depicted festivities honouring Christina of Sweden at Palazzo Barberini. His decorations at Palazzo Borghese, executed in 1671–1672, combine precise drawing and fluent storytelling with mythological scenes of a frequently idyllic character.
