Adriana Varejão was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1964 and began her artistic training at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage in 1983. Her first solo exhibition took place at Galeria Thomas Cohn in 1988. Painting, sculpture, photography and installation allow her to explore Portuguese colonial history in Brazil, cultural exchanges and the violence accompanying that history.
Azulejos and baroque architecture become recurring motifs. In some works, walls appear to open onto fleshlike matter; elsewhere, the Saunas depict almost monochrome tiled interiors constructed through perspective and light. The exhibition Chambre d’échos at the Fondation Cartier brought together several of these investigations in 2005. A gallery devoted to her work opened at Inhotim in 2008, reinforcing the dialogue between painting, three-dimensional form and architectural space.
This profile brings together identity references for Adriana Varejão and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
