Belgian painter, sculptor, draughtsman and graphic artist Guy Vandenbranden also works with collage. His career is marked by a transition from figuration to abstraction, followed by an expansion of his practice into relief and sculpture. From 1951, he abandons figuration and turns to lyrical abstraction. In 1952, he moves closer to the Brussels art scene and establishes connections with Pol Bury, Jo Delahaut, Kurt Lewy, Jean Rets and Jean Milo; in 1956, he joins the Art Abstrait group.
From 1958, his research focuses almost exclusively on black and white, and his work becomes almost monochrome. In 1960, together with Jef Verheyen and Englebert Van Anderlecht, he contributes to the formation of the Nouvelle École flamande. Other artists involved in the group include Paul Van Hoeydonck, Jan Dries and Vic Gentils; the group aims to bring its work to international attention, notably through exhibitions in Germany, Switzerland and Italy. From 1961, Vandenbranden works in relief and produces his first abstract sculptures.
The recorded exhibitions mark several stages in his career: a solo exhibition at the Albert Landry Gallery in New York in 1958, another at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Verviers in 1963, followed by a presentation with Roger Raveel at the Galerie Bernard in Solothurn in 1966; a solo exhibition is also recorded at the Morley Gallery in London in 1981. In 1982, he designs the stained-glass window for Beekkant metro station in Brussels. His work is the subject of the publication Guy Vandenbranden. Un demi siècle de constructivisme, published by Snoeck in Ghent in 2006 under the names of Marcel van Jole and Ernest Van Buynder. In 2016, David Vermeiren publishes Guy Vandenbranden.
