The English painter and engraver Thomas Edwin Mostyn, also known as Tom Mostyn, was born in Liverpool in 1864, the son of the artist Edwin Mostyn; he grew up in Manchester. He studied at the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, took part in a first local exhibition in 1880 and exhibited at the Royal Academy in London by the age of 29 at the latest. In 1893, he enrolled at the Herkomer Art School, where, according to the biography by Sulis Fine Art, he developed a broad and expressive technique.
His romantic garden scenes attracted considerable interest, while his style evolved over the course of his career. After leaving London for Devon in 1918, he turned partly away from contemporary genre subjects in favour of imaginative and romantic landscapes. His technique also changed: he increasingly used a palette knife. Elected a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1917, Mostyn held five exhibitions at the Fine Art Society in London, in 1919, 1920, 1922, 1923 and 1925. He also exhibited, among other venues, at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, the Cooling Galleries, the Grosvenor Gallery, the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and the Royal West of England Academy.
Works by the artist are held in the collections of Manchester City Galleries, National Museums Liverpool, the National Museum of Wales and the Royal West of England Academy. A retrospective of his work was organised at the Cooling Galleries in 1933. Marjorie Mostyn, herself an artist, is his daughter.
