Marcia Hafif

Born : 1929Died : 2018Documented citizenships : United States

Two reference points shed light on Marcia Hafif’s approach: in retrospect, she identifies certain works as belonging to «minimal pop», while her painting becomes monochrome at another stage in her career. After studying at Pomona College, she graduated there in 1951. In December 1961, she moved to Italy, where she lived until 1969; in Rome, she was part of the Italian avant-garde and formed a particularly close bond with Carla Accardi. Among the works she associates with «minimal pop», she cites 84. and 123., among others.

After returning to California, she undertook a course of study at the University of California, Irvine, where Robert Irwin and Craig Kauffman taught, and temporarily turned away from painting in favour of film, photography and sound installation. She moved to New York in 1971 and joined the Sonnabend Gallery in 1973; during this period, her painting became monochrome. In 1978, she published «Beginning Again» in Artforum, an article on the future of abstract art. Works listed by the Art Institute of Chicago include March 8, 1972, Mass Tone: Manganese Blue (1974) and Mass Tone Painting: Alizarin Crimson, April 24, 1974.

Hafif returned to California in 1999. In 2015, the Laguna Art Museum presented Marcia Hafif, the inventory: painting, an exhibition described as her first retrospective, which was subsequently shown in Switzerland. The collection of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo includes Untitled (1978), a watercolour on paper, and French Painting Terraile (1990), an oil painting on canvas.

This profile brings together identity references for Marcia Hafif and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
