Tim Maguire, born in the United Kingdom in 1958, emigrated to Australia the following year. He began exhibiting in Australia and Europe in the 1980s. Awarded the Moët & Chandon Fellowship in 1992, he moved to France in 1993 and continued working there for a decade.
His enlarged flowers and fruit evoke seventeenth-century Flemish still life, while their tight cropping also recalls cinema. Using digital photographs as starting points, he translates colour-separation processes borrowed from printing into oil painting. Drips and spots deliberately interrupt the photographic illusion. The encounter between the technically produced image and the handmade gesture is therefore central to his practice. He also works in lithography, represented in the University of Canberra’s collection.
This profile brings together identity references for Tim Maguire and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
