The Dutch painter Mattheus Terwesten (1670–1757), also a draughtsman and interior decorator, is particularly known for his portraits and historical allegories painted on walls and ceilings. Born in The Hague, he studied there under his elder brother Augustinus, Willem Doudyns and Daniel Mijtens the Younger. In Berlin, he attended drawing classes at the Academy of Arts and received a certificate.
In Rome, he joined the circle of the Bentvueghels, who gave him the nickname “Arend” — eagle —, and produced an album of drawings after antique models in 1697. On his return to The Hague in June 1699, he worked on commissions for important figures. He married Thedora van Rheenen in 1710; after Augustinus’s death in 1711, he succeeded him as court painter and was appointed professor at the Royal Academy by Frederick I of Prussia.
His decorative collaborations include, in particular, ceiling paintings, overmantel paintings and door panels. “Flowers and Putti” is listed as a work made with Pieter Hardimé. Other works cited include “Venus and Adonis”, “Allegory of Freedom” and “Amphitrite Ravaged by Neptune”. His teaching activity is documented by a list of several pupils, including Herman Diederik Cuipers, Pieter van Cuyck (I), Jan van Gool, Johan Graham, Hendrik van Hulst, Jacob van Nachenius and Andries Storck.
