Klaes Molenaer, also known by the first names Nicolaes or Claes, was active as a painter in Haarlem from 1644 to 1676. The brother of painters Jan Miense and Bartholomeus Molenaer, he is known in particular for his winter landscapes.
His admission to the Guild of Saint Luke in 1651 marks a point of reference in his career in Haarlem. Several works recorded in French museums testify to the variety of subjects preserved under his name: the Musée Fabre in Montpellier holds a Winter Landscape dated 1660–1670, while the Musée Malraux in Le Havre lists Skaters. The Laundry is held at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille, a Woodland Edge in Winter at the Musée national Magnin in Dijon, and a Landscape at the Musée des beaux-arts in Bordeaux. These paintings are executed in oil on wood.
The Musée Baron-Martin in Gray also holds a version of The Inn by the Water, also called The Swan Inn, dated around 1650; it is painted in oil on wood. Molenaer dies in Haarlem in 1676 and is buried on 31 December of that year in the Church of Saint Bavo.
