Greta Hällfors-Sipilä

Born : 1899Died : 1974Documented citizenships : Finland

Greta Hällfors-Sipilä (1899–1974) was a Finnish painter associated with her country’s early experiments in modernism. During the 1910s she attended the Finnish Art Society’s Drawing School, where her future husband, Sulho Sipilä, also studied. Particularly receptive to the Russian avant-garde, she explored liberated colour and forms that departed from traditional representation.

During the 1920s and 1930s, everyday experience supplied her subjects: interiors, portraits of her partner, Helsinki streets and the city’s entertainments. Summer stays in the Uusimaa archipelago introduced boats, bathing huts and beach scenes into her work. Music also occupied an important place in her life. An accomplished pianist, she shared with Sulho the practice of organising small concerts at home for their family and friends.
