Jean-Baptiste Lallemand, born in Dijon in 1716, entered the Académie de Saint-Luc as a landscape painter in 1745. The Castle and Bridge of Sant’Angelo, held in Dijon, represents an identifiable Roman site; the catalogue links it with another painting depicting the Ponte Rotto.
His Dijon gouaches of the 1780s include a view of the Place Royale dated 1781. In The Storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789, at the Musée Carnavalet, urban observation meets a revolutionary event. Cannon, smoke, a stone bridge and a drawbridge organise the combat scene, viewed from south of the fortress. This oil on canvas, catalogued around 1789, reflects an interest in places as well as the actions unfolding within them.
This profile brings together identity references for Jean-Baptiste Lallemand and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
