Eugen Napoleon Neureuther learned drawing from his father Ludwig before entering the Munich Academy in 1823, where he studied with Wilhelm Kobell and Peter Cornelius. He executed arabesque borders for the Glyptothek’s Trojan Hall and subsequently worked with Carl Rottmann on the Hofgarten arcades. His lithographed marginal drawings surrounding Goethe’s Ballads and Romances began appearing in 1829.
Fairy tales and poetry continued to supply subjects for his graphic work. The Lenbachhaus holds Sleeping Beauty of 1862, combining pencil, gouache, ink and pen, and The Goose Girl at the Well of 1876, drawn in brown ink over pencil. Neureuther also designed objects for the applied arts. From 1848 to 1856 he served as artistic director of the Nymphenburg porcelain manufactory, alongside his work in illustration and decorative painting.
