Heinrich von Rustige

Heinrich von Rustige was a painter and writer from Werl whose career developed in Stuttgart. He taught history painting at the Royal Art School from 1845 to 1887 and directed the picture gallery of the Museum of Fine Arts from 1856 to 1897. His institutional work accompanied a practice encompassing historical scenes, representations of artists and portraits.

In Raphael Painting the Sistine Madonna, held by the Staatsgalerie, the young master stands before his easel while his beloved leans against him. The museum also preserves Emperor Otto I as Victor over the Danes. His Self-Portrait, made during his studies in Frankfurt, takes a different approach: Rustige presents himself as an elegant young gentleman against a coastal landscape, placing his own likeness within a natural setting.

This profile brings together identity references for Heinrich von Rustige and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
