Friedrich Bury first learned drawing from his father and painting from Anton Tischbein before entering the Düsseldorf Academy in 1780. He stayed in Italy from 1782 to 1799. In Rome, he shared a house on the Corso with Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein and Johann Heinrich Meyer. There he met Goethe in 1786, beginning a friendship that continued throughout his life.
Bury portrayed the writer several times, including a chalk portrait of 1800 preserved in Weimar. He also depicted Herder, Fichte and Jean Paul, alongside compositions on mythological themes. Duchess Anna Amalia supported his career. Working around the Berlin court, he painted figures including the reformer Baron vom und zum Stein and General Scharnhorst. His portrait clientele also included the rulers of Hesse-Cassel and the Netherlands.
