Seund Ja Rhee

Born : 1918Documented citizenships : South Korea

She favours woodblock printing and makes her prints by hand; sometimes, she presses the carved blocks directly onto the paper. Her visual vocabulary draws on the symbols and characters of Korean and Japanese writing.

Also known as Yi Seong-ja, she was born on 3 June 1918 in Jinju, Korea. After attending Jinju Girls’ High School, she left in 1935 to study at Jissen Women’s University in Tokyo. She returned to Korea in 1938 and married. In 1951, the Korean War separated her from her three children. She then decided to leave for Paris and go into exile in France. She settled in Tourrettes-sur-Loup, near Vence, in 1958. Among her works is the signed canvas Douce Soleil, dated 1963, which was sold at auction for CHF 14,592.
