Samuel John Stump (c.1779–1863) was a British painter specialising in miniatures and landscapes. Trained at London’s Royal Academy Schools, he exhibited at the Academy from 1802 to 1845. His clientele included numerous theatrical personalities, whom he sometimes portrayed in character. Miniature portraits, oil paintings and landscape views consequently formed a varied body of work.
Between 1813 and 1820 he also exhibited miniatures with the Oil and Watercolour Society. His landscapes of England, Italy and Switzerland were shown at the British Institution until 1849. A member of the Sketching Society, he participated in an artistic circle centred on drawing. Several of his portraits circulated as prints, including some that he engraved himself using the stipple technique.
