Ossip Zadkine’s work encompasses several practices: sculpture, drawing, watercolour and gouache, as well as printmaking, book illustration and designs for tapestries. Trained in London at the Regent Street Polytechnicum and the École Centrale d’artisanat, he continued his studies in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1909 and 1910.
He took part in the Salon des Indépendants in 1911; a biography by Galerie Hélène Bailly Marcilhac dates his joining the Cubists to the following year. In 1922, the Musée de Grenoble acquired his gilded wood sculpture Le Fauve; the Musée du Petit Palais in Geneva is also among the public collections that hold his work.
During the Second World War, Zadkine stayed in the United States, where he worked in New York, Arizona and North Carolina, before returning to France in September 1945. He subsequently taught at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris from 1946 to 1958. His career was marked by exhibitions and retrospectives, notably at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 1933, the Musée national d’Art moderne in Paris in 1949 and in Knokke-le-Zoute in 1963.
This profile brings together identity references for Ossip Zadkine and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
