Known as Fritz Grebe, Friedrich Heinrich Ludwig Grebe trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cassel; August Bromeis is associated with this period of study, dated between 1872 and 1877. He then worked as an independent artist in Cassel, Düsseldorf, Willingshausen and Berlin, focusing on animal painting and landscape. His travels in Norway informed a group of fjord motifs, while his landscapes also took Hesse, the Harz, Westphalia and Rügen as their subjects.
In Ahrenshoop, he had Villa Grebe built at Grenzweg 8 in 1895, then sold it in 1923. From 1916, he stayed alternately in Ahrenshoop and Düsseldorf, two places that thus marked the later part of his career. The diversity of regions represented in his landscapes is consistent with this itinerant practice, although the sources provide no further details about his compositional choices or the characteristics of his painting.
From 1880, Grebe regularly exhibited his landscapes in major exhibitions. He was a member of the Malkasten in Düsseldorf, the Association of Berlin Artists and the Allgemeine Deutsche Kunstgenossenschaft. His works are recorded in public collections, including the Kulturhistorisches Museum in Rostock; the museums in Kassel and Ahrenshoop are also among the institutions mentioned in connection with him.
This profile brings together identity references for Fritz Grebe and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
