Joseph Mossmer, usually catalogued as Joseph Mössmer in Austrian collections, was born in Vienna in 1780 and died there in 1845. A landscape painter, draughtsman and printmaker, he taught landscape painting at the Vienna Academy from 1815. His pupils included August Heinrich and Friedrich Loos. His work participates in the transition from older landscape traditions towards nineteenth century observation of nature.
The Albertina holds a Grove with a Wooden Cart, Pond and Church Tower, signed and dated 1810, executed in gouache on blue paper. The Wien Museum preserves Woodland by Moonlight, a small oil painting on paper dated around 1820–1830. Its motifs combine forest, night and a roe deer. These examples reveal the range of materials and atmospheric situations within his landscape practice.
