Robert Edouard Chapallaz (1885–1962), born in Nyon, worked as a photographer, postcard publisher and painter. Following commercial training in Zurich in 1901, he joined his father Louis, proprietor of Lausanne’s Photo-Hall shop. His name appeared in the family business from 1910, and he developed its activities particularly through postcard publishing.
Based on Avenue Druey from 1930, he also offered industrial and documentary photography, enlargements and retouching. Lausanne collections preserve his urban views, including a postcard showing the chapel of the new pathology institute and the monument to Dr César Roux. Alongside this profession, Chapallaz taught himself to paint. His Lake Geneva landscapes extend his attention to the regional environment. He exhibited in Lausanne and Bern between 1952 and 1958, combining professional photography with a personal painting practice.
