Michael Rögler

Born : 1940Documented citizenships : Germany

Michael Rögler (1940–2021), born in Mainz, was a German painter whose career developed mainly in Frankfurt. From 1960 to 1963 he studied painting with Heinrich Wildemann at the Stuttgart academy, then art history at Frankfurt’s Goethe University until 1965. His contact with Heinz Kreutz and Otto Greis, members of Quadriga, accompanied his early abstract investigations.

After restricting his palette to white and grey under the influence of ZERO, he returned to more complex relationships between colours. Goethe, Monet and subsequently Rothko and Newman informed his thinking about colour and pictorial space. Exhibitions at the Landesmuseum in Oldenburg, the Frankfurter Kunstverein and the museum in Lissone marked a career in which both painting and drawing played a significant role.

This profile brings together identity references for Michael Rögler and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
