The Bosnian painter and illustrator Mersad Berber (1940–2012) trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana, completing his painting degree in 1963 and a printmaking specialisation in 1965. He subsequently taught drawing and printmaking at the Sarajevo academy from 1978 to 1982. This engagement with painting and graphic art runs through his work. Portraits of women and horses, sometimes accompanied by peasant riders, are recurring subjects, while some woodcuts transform female faces into more abstract forms. Oil painting, screenprinting and offset broadened his expressive means and carried related imagery across different materials. An exhibition of recent work at Galerie Fischer in 2001–2002 also records the presentation of his art in Switzerland.
