Jean Dewasne (1921–1999), a French painter, lithographer and sculptor, approached abstraction as a field for technical as well as formal experimentation. Following a first exhibition in 1941, he produced an abstract work in 1943 and presented this direction at the Galerie René Drouin in 1946. With Edgard Pillet, he founded the Atelier d’art abstrait in Paris in 1950. L’Apothéose de Marat, painted on hardboard in 1951, uses industrial lacquers. His Antisculptures transfer colour onto car and motorcycle bodywork. These explorations continued on an architectural scale, notably at the Arche de la Défense, where he worked with enamelled stainless-steel panels. The Kunsthalle Bern held a retrospective in 1966. He joined the Académie des beaux-arts in 1991.
This profile brings together identity references for Jean Dewasne and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
