American artist Robert Longo, born in 1953, develops a body of work that moves from drawing to cinema and explores images in both their intensity and their duration. After studying at Buffalo State College, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts there. In 1977, he moved to New York with Cindy Sherman and worked as a studio assistant to Vito Acconci and Dennis Oppenheim. His first solo exhibition, in 1981, presented drawings from the Men in the Cities series. His work was subsequently shown at documenta in Kassel in 1982 and 1987, at the Whitney Biennial in 1983 and 2004, and at the Venice Biennale in 1997.
In his charcoal drawings, Longo draws on the chiaroscuro of the Old Masters and constructs contrasts of light and shadow. He sets the instantaneous capture of photography against the extended time of drawing, which can take months. Several series depict phenomena at the height of their unfolding: explosions, breaking waves, sharks emerging from the water or roses in bloom. Since 2015, he has also made drawings based on conservation X-rays of old works, including A Bar at the Folies-Bergère by Édouard Manet, seeking what the image reveals beyond its surface. His practice also extends to cinema: in 1995, he directed the cyberpunk science-fiction film Johnny Mnemonic. The work Ohne Titel (Joe), dated 1981–1991 and executed in charcoal, graphite and acrylic on paper, depicts, according to the sale notice, the musician Joe Hannan, a friend of Longo and fellow player in the punk band Menthol Wars.
This profile brings together identity references for Robert Longo and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
