Italian painter Mario Nigro, born in Pistoia in 1917 and deceased in Livorno in 1992, brought together scientific studies, music and painting in his career. After his family moved to Livorno in 1929, he pursued studies at the University of Pisa, where he obtained a degree in chemistry in 1940 and then one in pharmacology in 1947. Alongside his university studies, he studied music and painting.
He worked as a pharmacologist while devoting himself increasingly to art from 1948 onwards. After an initial post-Cubist period, he joined the Movimento Arte Concreta; in the late 1940s, he turned to abstract art and developed several series. In 1949, he travelled to Milan and presented his first solo exhibition there, at the Libreria Salto. He took part in the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in Paris in 1951. In 1958, he gave up his career as a pharmacologist.
His participation in the Venice Biennale began with an invitation to the 32nd Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte della Città di Venezia in 1964 and continued in 1968. A sale listing describes Il camino degli Dei, dated 1958, as a signed oil on canvas measuring 500 × 650 mm. The lot was sold by Germann Auktionshaus for CHF 3,200, excluding fees.
