The German landscape painter Carl Morgenstern (1811–1893) is associated here with a view of Lake Como and Bellagio. Titled Blick auf den Comer See und Bellagio, this oil on canvas measures 27 × 40 cm. On the reverse of the stretcher, a handwritten note bears the inscription “Prof. Carl Morgenstern / Comer See (Bellagio)”; it is considered, with reservation, probably to be in the artist’s hand. The published provenance indicates a sale from Morgenstern’s estate at F. A. C. Prestel in Frankfurt on 9 May 1899 (lot 49), followed by a private collection in Hesse.
This profile brings together identity references for Carl Morgenstern and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
References include catalogue entries and available results; they do not all represent completed sales. Attributed works and special lots are excluded from the priced results.
