Carl Hilgers
Born : 1818Died : 1890
Carl Hilgers, also written as Karl Hilgers, was a German landscape painter who was born and died in Düsseldorf, in 1818 and 1890. He received his first lessons at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts from 1829, at the age of eleven, and then studied there as an enrolled student from 1833 to 1844. From 1840, he joined the master class of the landscape painter Johann Wilhelm Schirmer. After a four-year stay in Berlin, he returned to Düsseldorf, where he became a member of the artists’ association Malkasten. He was also a friend of the Rhenish painter Caspar Scheuren.
Other works cited among those appreciated in his time include Landschaft mit herannahendem Gewitter (1838), Holländische Hütten (1839), Gegend bei Amsterdam (1840) and Niederländische Küche, mit der Aussicht auf die See (1840). Wintervergnügen, dated 1843, is an oil on canvas measuring 46 × 56 cm. His firm also carried out the decorative painting of the Tonhalle in Düsseldorf, fitted out according to Eberhard Westhofen’s plans. A full-length portrait of Hilgers painted by Johann Peter Hasenclever in 1850 is held at the Stadtmuseum in Düsseldorf.
