Fleurs des champs

A bouquet of wildflowers rises from a vase placed on a table. The large white flower heads shape the foreground; among them, small yellow flowers, blue bellflowers and purplish clusters add numerous accents. Against the brown background, the tallest stems retain their lightness, while the light draws the eye around the heart of the bouquet. In this floral still life, Annichini favours the sweep of the stems over the strict arrangement of a bouquet. The signature, visible at the lower right, is set apart from the flowers and discreetly follows the line of the table. The white petals are rendered with short strokes, more distinct than the diffuse forms surrounding them. Browns and greens mingle in the lower section, where leaves, stems and small flowers form a profuse mass. A few more vivid blues and violets animate the depth without disrupting the overall softness of the tones. This oil on canvas measures 50 x 40 cm without the frame. On the reverse, the canvas is stretched over a stretcher fitted with a hanging cord. A wide, light-coloured frame with a moulded profile and a ridged surface surrounds the painting. Its cream tones echo the white flowers; the overall dimensions are 64 x 54 cm. The bouquet thus retains something spontaneous: an abundance of light forms held in the tranquil balance of the vase and the brown background.
